The original sketch was done up in the Venue in Strandhill, County Sligo. I remember this being just the place to be on a Thursday or Friday evening – the local musicians would make the wood in the floors and walls hum with their stories. I’d take in a tenner (when that could get you three pints) and a sheet of A4 paper folded in four with the aim to get four pieces done before the I left.
By then I’d been in Ireland for a while and my only board was my Steve Lis style keel-finned fish shaped by Dain Thomas of Sea Surfboards (Byron Bay). The board itself was already several years old. When you’ve only got one board to take anything and everything on with you develop a fairly intimate relationship with it. Eventually it seemed the only sensible choice regardless of what the conditions were and, it just was. Obsessed with one board to ride with the seasons. A ride for all seasons? A seasoned ride?
We had forty-nine days of rain that Summer. A little unhinged as a result I was gutted we didn’t get the half century. The surf was achingly small for the duration but the twinny rode it all. Thick-as and barely any rocker, she paddles like a log – I mean crikey, you can sneak five out on the nose of this thing.
And what will you take to ride the Summer rain?
